Butterfly

No one saw the beauty held,
when you lay sleeping still as ice
hidden, covered,
in the shelter
of your shell cocoon.

Many saw but passed you by
as just another piece of dirt.
They saw outer solid shell
and could not see inside.

Then suddenly the cocoon burst,
and there you stood emerging flight,
struggling as you tried to move
your brightly colored wings.

From high above I saw you there,
delighting in your present state.
A butterfly, aware at once
of freedom and of life.
