The Johns Hopkins Eating Disorders Program

Director: Angela Guarda MDThe Johns Hopkins Eating Disorders Program provides comprehensive assessment and treatment of anorexia nervosa, bulimia and other eating disorders. The philosophy of the Program includes focus on long-term normalization of eating behavior and body image. Individualized levels of care include inpatient, partial hospitalization, outpatient treatment and consultation services. The partial hospital has a 7-day per week 12-hour per day capability with supervised overnight accommodation available at minimal cost. Inpatient and partial hospitalization programs are fully integrated and staffed by the same treatment team providing the flexibility to adapt intensity of care to patient need. Advantages of the Johns Hopkins Program include:•Daily evaluation and treatment planning by a psychiatrist-led, multidisciplinary team•A closely monitored behavioral protocol to assist patients in regaining control over their eating and establishing a healthy weight•Nutritional education and guidance in meal preparation, menu selecting and portion sizing to normalize eating behavior and social eating skills(includes meal preps, grocery shopping and restaurant outings)•Maudsley-based family therapy and parent training for adolescent patients including parental involvement in treatment planning and meal supervision.•Psychopharmacologic treatment of comorbid psychiatric conditions, including mood and anxiety disorders•Intensive group therapy to promote cognitive restructuring and behavioral change and to develop interpersonal skills and improve self-esteem•Functional coping and relapse prevention skills training•Full consultation and treatment services for patients with serious medical complicationsResearch study: BULIMIA NERVOSAThe Johns Hopkins Eating Disorders Program is seeking women age 18-35 with bulimia interested in an NIH sponsored outpatient study. There will be payment for participation. The study includes 10 weeks of outpatient treatment, a health assessment, blood testing and pictures of the brain taken using a medical scanner.PI: Angela S.
