The Comprehensive Eating Disorders Program at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital
The Comprehensive Eating Disorders Program at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital is internationally recognized as one of the few comprehensive eating disorders programs for children and adolescents and has successfully treated patients for over 25 years. The Program offers an unparalleled continuum of patient care utilizing state of the art medicine and the best available psychological and psychiatric interventions to specifically treat the range of child and adolescent eating disorders. Inpatient services are provided at a dedicated 15 bed unit at El Camino Hospital. Outpatient services are delivered through the Department of Psychiatry on the Stanford Campus and the Division of Adolescent Medicine’s Eating Disorders Clinic at Castro Commons in Mountain View. Comprehensive new patient evaluations/consultations are offered on an outpatient basis. These evaluations include psychiatric assessment of the individual and family, nutritional evaluation, and medical evaluation. We are currently enrolling patients in several treatment research protocols that involve ongoing psychiatric care and medical follow-up. In addition, patients can be seen for ongoing psychiatric and medical care outside these research protocols, though this depends on therapist availability and insurance coverage. Each patient receives individualized care provided by a team of adolescent medicine doctors, child psychiatrists and psychologists, nutritionists, and social workers who are highly experienced in working with young children and adolescents with eating disorders. The Program is directed by James Lock, MD, PhD and Cynthia Kapphahn, MD. Dr. Kapphahn is Acting Director of the Division of Adolescent Medicine at Stanford. She is a board certified pediatrician and adolescent medicine specialist with more than 12 years of clinical experience managing the medical aspects of eating disorders in adolescents. Dr. Lock is board certified in adult as well as child and adolescent psychiatry. Dr. Lock is a renowned expert in the field of eating disorders. His major research and clinical interests are in psychotherapy research in children and adolescents, specifically those with eating disorders. Dr. Lock has published over 100 articles, abstracts and book chapters, and has authored the only evidenced based treatment manual for anorexia nervosa – Treatment Manual for Anorexia Nervosa – A Family-Based Approach.
