Phyliss Shanken, M.A.
If you were my patient, you could expect me to present you with various feedback, observations, affirmations or questions to help you search for explanations of your pain. You and I seek to reach understanding about why you react in a characteristic way and how this effects your present-day functioning. On my web page (www.introspectcare.com/phyliss.html), please see, "What to Expect in Therapy & Why I Love My Job." I specialize in the psychotherapeutic treatment of adolescents and adults in individual, group, couples and family psychotherapy: anxiety; depression ; eating disorders; pain management; relationships; self-esteem & confidence; and stress. I am a Co-Director of INTROSPECT, Colmar, PA and founder of INTROSPECT's Women's Actualization and Food Abuse programs, and have developed a fresh approach to the treatment of eating disorders which combines insight, metaphor, group dynamics and relationship-oriented psychotherapy in an intensive outpatient setting. I collaborate extensively with physicians and with INTROSPECT's dietitian to design an outpatient treatment team. The goal is for patients to reach successful outcomes without having to be hospitalized or enrolled in partial hospital programs. I’ve conducted staff development training and lectured on eating disorders at such facilities as Renfrew Center, Belmont, and others. I sit on the Board of Directors of the American Association of Bulimia and Anorexia (AABA). I designed INTROSPECT's Eating Obsessions Quiz (please go to INTROSPECT’s website, introspectcare.com, and click on the link. As an organizational/HUMOR consultant, I've facilitated programs for over 300 audiences: Laughter/Stress; Food Abuse; Pain; Assertiveness/Self-Confidence; Diversity; Love; Women; Change; Parenting. I've been a newspaper and magazine columnist. I write screenplays with a psychological theme but suitable for an everyday audience. I’ve been published in numerous psychological, review and literary journals, have received literary awards and authored the books, Silhouettes of Woman and Laughter is a StressBuster. I am a contributor to the anthology, From Eulogy to Joy. I recently completed a book entitled, CONVERSATIONS WITH PERFECT STRANGERS : Memoirs of a Psychologist.
