Kathy C. Behrend, Ph.D.
Therapy requires an authentic, honest, and empathic relationship that allows for the creation of a safe and supportive environment and an open discussion about symptom use. I look at eating disordered symptoms as a way to cope with painful feelings and thoughts, and believe that over time these symptoms can be given up when more healthy coping skills are developed. Treatment needs to be a multi-faceted approach that focuses on reducing symptoms, understanding the underlying roots of the disorder, and improving relationships. I take an active approach in the work and feel it is necessary that the client and I work collaboratively towards healing and insight.
I am a licensed psychologist with experience in treating eating disorders at four NYC area universities. I also have training in the treatment of trauma, depression, anxiety and self-injury, which often co-occur with eating disorders.
I work with nutritionists, psychiatrists, and physicians as needed.
