Julie Levin, MFT
Unlike dieting (with its 90% failure rate) which identifies controlled eating and weight loss as desirable goals, my groups, workshops and individual therapy centers on the idea that the body is self-regulating through the homeostatic processes of hunger and fullness. We each have a natural weight that may or may not be thin. When we follow our bodies' cues about when, what, and how much to each, we stabilize at this natural weight. Two things tend to get in the way of following these cues. One is emotional hunger - the desire to eat in order to soothe emotional discomfort. The other is body shame which drives people into the diet-binge cycle. Clients are encouraged to interactively explore their emotional hungers. Together we brainstorm ways they can "feed" themselves more accurately - by setting boundaries, developing stronger relationships, pursuing a dream... whatever it is they are hungry for. And they are challenged to look at cultural and familial pressures about weight and body type, deconstructing the myths about beauty, sexual attraction, and worth. This is a dynamic, energizing, positive, and very safe environment for people with food/body wounding to learn: * They are not alone. * Diets have an extremely high failure rate - it's not something inherently wrong with them! * We are meant to come in all different shapes and sizes. * Self-judgment/criticism is an ineffective motivator and reduces self-esteem. * Self-acceptance/love is possible, even in a culture that reinforces self-hatred. * We all deserve to feel good about our lives, our looks and our choices. * It’s possible and permissible to stop others from being mean/critical about appearance. * It’s okay to do follow their dreams right now – they don’t have to wait till they lose however many pounds.
