Germaine Lawrence

Germaine Lawrence, located in Arlington, MA, is a residential treatment center for girls ages 11-18. Using a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary team approach and cognitive behavioral therapy, the program successfully treats girls with life-threatening anorexia, bulimia, and binge-eating disorders. Germaine Lawrence has a proven treatment model that not only addresses the symptoms of an eating disorder but also focuses on resolving the underlying causes, leading to real change in girls’ lives. The program provides individual, family, group and milieu therapy. Germaine Lawrence has extensive medical on-campus expertise and partners with Boston Children’s Hospital.Germaine Lawrence uses a variety of treatment approaches, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, techniques based on the dialectical behavioral therapy model as well as individual psychotherapy, trauma therapy, substance abuse therapy, animal-assisted therapy, expressive and body-oriented therapies (including body image work, yoga, and supervised exercise programs). Individual treatment plans match each girl’s unique needs. Milieu therapy supports girls in developing personal strengths, improved communication and self-confidence to pursue their interests. Staff assist girls in developing independent living skills, and provide them with opportunities to practice healthy coping skills to facilitate the transition home to their families. Staff provide pre and post meal support and supervision. Specialized treatment protocols are designed to stabilize problematic eating behavior and support girls in developing life-long, healthy coping skills. Protocols help students clarify expectations, make privileges clear and consistent, and provide motivation and confidence necessary for students to move forward in treatment and in their recovery. Families are actively involved in their daughters’ treatment through family therapy meetings, parent support and education groups, family dinners, meal support coaching, treatment team meetings, and support around home visits. Girls attend an accredited school program with the ability to earn full credits from their local school systems. We help girls prepare and participate in taking PSAT’s, SAT’s, and MCAS exams.A specialized eating disorder program at Germaine Lawrence offers a comprehensive array of clinical, milieu, educational, and medical services designed to meet the needs of teenage girls and assist them in their recovery.
