Dr. Dana Iyer, Ph.D, Sayvah Center
Traditionally, practitioners working in this area have applied the same principles of recovery to both adult & adolescent patients. Having worked in this area for over 10 years, I have come to recognize that the needs of my adolescent patients differ from that of my adult patients. With adolescents, I believe the family is an essential component in recovery. I use family based therapy (FBT) in which the parents are asked to help regulate their child’s eating. Research supports that family based therapy demonstrates good outcome for recovery without the need for inpatient hospitalization. If your child has been in individual treatment that has not been effective, now might be good time to try a different approach that includes you in the process. With adults, I incorporate techniques to understand the factors that contribute to the onset of disordered eating as well as recognizing & changing the current thoughts & attitudes that maintain it. I also offer a 6-week group for overeaters.
