Donald Altman, M.A. (West Linn Counseling)

BIOGRAPHY/COUNSELING: A pioneer in mindful eating, Donald Altman, M.A., is a professional counselor, former Buddhist monk, award-winning writer, and author of several books on mindful eating and living. Donald has spent 2 1/2 years working as a Senior Mental Health Therapist at the Providence St. Vincent Eating Clinic in Portland, Oregon, where he created their first Mindful Eating Program. He now works with private patients at West Linn Counseling (503) 650-2208 x-1, the clinic he co-founded. In addition, Donald teaches at Lewis and Clark Graduate School of Education and Counseling, and is on the board of directors of The Center for Mindful Eating (TCME.ORG). Donald welcomes a team approach when working with clients. His is a collaborative approach that helps clients tap their own wisdom and well-being. CLASSES/GROUPS: Donald offers workshops for both individuals and professionals. His 12-Weeks to Mindful Eating Groups are held in various Portland locations and can be accessed through the website: http://www.mindfulpractices.comHe also offers on-site training and tele-classes on mindful eating for healthcare professionals--such as dietitians, counselors, nurses, and others--who want to bring mindfulness into their work.MINDFUL TOOLS: Donald has created several practical and powerful mindful eating tools that take an awareness approach to creating a new, balanced, and healthy relationship with food and eating. One new tool is a set of 52 "MINDFUL EATING MEAL CARDS" that helps individuals get centered during mealtime or throughout the day. The cards feature six unique categories--Blessings, Mindfulness, Intentions, Hunger and Taste, Contemplations, Letting Go--that help bring focused attention to meals or any activity. The cards can also be used in groups. (The cards can be used as a tool by those who work with clients.)The "12-WEEKS TO MINDFUL EATING GUIDEBOOK" with the Your Karma Is In the Refrigerator CD" is a comprehensive 265 page workbook that teaches 27 unique skills and contains over 30 different activities and experiences. Since disordered eating didn't start overnight, this program touches on many new strategies for finding balance with food, body, and weight management.
