Bergstein, Pauline D., Ph.D.
With more than a decade of experience in working with teens, adults, and even children with eating disorders and other behaviors such as cutting and substance abuse and/or addiction, Dr. Bergstein is expertly trained in the in-depth psychotherapy required of working with individuals with these troubles. Dr. Bergstein offers two locations from which individuals, couples and/or families can work in a private and serious manner, both are in Bergen County, New Jersey; one in Englewood and one in Ridgewood. If needed, Dr. Bergstein has professionals in nutrition, psychiatry/psychopharmacology and general medicine that can serve as available as integral aspects of treatment. Whether trying to break free from the compulsivity and torture of an eating disordered or trying to understand the connection between one’s eating disorder and other experiences, such as depression, anxiety, or sexual or gender-identity issues, the work with Dr. Bergstein proceeds from a deep-understanding perspective which promotes self-motivated, desired change. Life with an eating disorder is the lonely torture of striving for something that is never quite reached and the fear and despair that life can never really be different. An understanding perspective allows each person to not only fully comprehend the fear of relinquishing an eating disorder but also the dread of hoping that life could be different.
