Ada Karlstrand, MFT
Ada Karlstrand LMFTI am a licensed marriage family therapist with experience treating clients with eating disorders, including anorexia, bulimia and eating disorders NOS (which includes binge eating disorder), as well as clients with eating disorders and co-occurring substance abuse disorders. Additionally, I also have experience working with clients who may not meet the specific criterion for an eating disorder, but are struggling with such issues as:eating when not hungry, not eating when hungry, repetitive dieting and obsession about calories and fat intake, feeling embarrassment or shame about eating in front of other people, using alcohol or drugs to control weight and eating, engaging in constant comparison of your body to others, never feeling satisfied with your weight or having the numbers on the scale determine your mood for the day. For people with eating disorders, the pain and struggles of daily life can become transferred into issues with food and body image. For example, it is not uncommon for someone with an eating disorder to feel legitimately angry about a certain situation, and then quickly, unconsciously, switch to hating a specific body part instead of feeling and or expressing the anger. Recognizing this pattern and identifying the feelings underneath body hatred and food obsession is a key step in recovery. Additionally, learning to find alternate ways to cope with and live through those feelings, without obsession about food or body image is a skill that can be learned. In therapy, we can identify tools and ways to nurture one’s self that are not about food or one’s body. Together we can help you learn to recognize what you are truly hungry for and how to honor those needs instead of manipulating your weight, your food or your body.I work from a multi-disciplinary team based approach, focusing on co-coordinating my treatment plans with other professionals, including doctors, psychiatrists, support groups and nutritionists to provide the comprehensive care for my clients. My therapeutic orientation is a combination of approaches including cognitive behavioral, psychodynamic, psycho-educational and gestalt techniques designed to provide an individually tailored treatment plan to meet the specific needs of each client. One goal I hold for my clients is that they can ultimately discover their own strength, knowledge and inner wisdom that has been camouflaged by food and body image issues.
